A duck is a bird, just like a sparrow or a pigeon that you may see in your backyard. But ducks are special because they can live on land, swim in water, and they can also fly high in the sky. This is because ducks have webbed feet that help them to swim efficiently in water, strong wings for flying, and they can walk on the land too.

Ducks come in different sizes and colors. Some are white, some are green, some are brown, and some even have striking patterns of more than one color. Their feathers are waterproof, so even after a good dip in the water, ducks do not get wet!

You know those sounds that ducks make? We usually interpret those sounds as “quack”. However, only female ducks make that sound – the males make a soft rasping sound.

You probably have heard the phrase “lucky duck”. People use it to describe someone who is very fortunate or often has good things happen to them. It’s possible that the phrase came about because ducks seem to have such an easy life floating on the water.

Ducks actually have a very long history with humans. They were domesticated by people as early as 500 B.C. in China – that’s over 2500 years ago! Since then, they’ve been bred for their feathers, meat, and eggs around the world.
