Food comes from the world all around us
It starts out as a seed in the soil, as a calf in a herd, or as an egg in a nest. Then, with water, sunlight, and the care from farmers, these grow into the delicious meals we enjoy every day.
Some of our food comes directly from animals like chickens, cows, and pigs. Other foods come from plants that we grow in fields, like corn, wheat, and vegetables.
Food does more than just fill up our stomachs. It has special properties that give our bodies the nutrients they need to grow, heal, and stay healthy and strong.
For instance, the protein in a piece of chicken helps our muscles grow. The vitamins in fresh fruit keep our skin glowing and our minds sharp.
Foods also have different tastes and textures; some are sweet, some are salty, some are crunchy, and others are juicy.
Do you ever wonder why we cook food? Well, there’s more to it than just making it taste good. Cooking can also make our food safe to eat by killing bacteria and other nasties that might make us sick.
So the next time you sit down to eat, remember: food is not just a yummy snack. It’s a gift from nature that helps keep us strong and healthy!
