A hermit crab is not like the other crabs you might see at the beach. It’s a little odd and that’s because it carries its house on its back! Hermit crabs are called like this because they live inside the shells of other animals, like snails. When they outgrow their shell, they find a bigger one to move into. Pretty smart, huh?

Hermit crabs come from all around the world, but mostly from warm places like the tropics, where it’s like summer all the time. There are also hermit crabs who live in the cold waters of the ocean floor! How cool is that?

People often keep hermit crabs as pets because they’re interesting and cute, but mostly because they are easy to look after. Did you know that some hermit crabs can live up to 30 years? That’s longer than most cats or dogs!

Hermit crabs have two claws. One is bigger than the other and they use them for different things. The smaller claw is for eating and climbing, while the larger claw is for defense.

Despite their name, hermit crabs are very social creatures and they often live in big groups. Which means they are not as solitary as real hermits! So, now you know why the hermit crab is a pretty awesome creature!
