A spiral is a special type of curve or line that winds around a center point and gets farther away as it moves around. Think of it like a snail shell. The center point is the starting spot and the curve moves around it, getting bigger and bigger as it goes. This can be easily drawn using a crayon or a pencil on a piece of paper.

The name “spiral” originally comes from an ancient Greek word called ‘speira’. This word means “a coil”, kind of like a twisted rope. So you can imagine, a spiral is like a rope that’s been unwound and spread in circles on the ground.

Spirals are very interesting because they naturally appear in all sorts of things. You can see spirals in snail shells, in the coiled vines of some plants, in the way water drains from your bathtub, or in the design of huge galaxies far, far away in space!

Spirals can also be created in lots of different ways. For example, some spirals are perfectly regular, with each part the same size as the next. Others might get bigger or smaller in a special pattern.

Did you know spirals are also pretty magical? In mathematics, there’s a famous spiral known as the Fibonacci Spiral. It’s a pattern that shows up in unexpected places like in the arrangement of seeds in a sunflower, and is considered to be an example of the fantastic beauty of nature.

Spirals aren’t just pretty, they’re useful too. Notice the spirals on your thumb? Courts can use fingerprints as evidence because each person’s spiral is totally unique.
